Power Saving Solutions was selected by Generator Power to provide a reliable, clean, quiet and efficient power solution for a mobile telecoms site in Croydon, UK.

Client Profile

Generator Power is a generator hire company, providing generators for a wide range of industries, including telecoms, utilities, construction, offshore oil and gas, events and facilities management.


The overall objective was to provide a low-noise, environment-friendly power solution for a Vodafone mobile telecoms mast in a highly built-up area.


The solution uses two Hussh Pod 30/45 hybrid generators with a bespoke auto change-over switch.

Previously, Generator Power had used a diesel generator at the site. As well as being noisy, this generator used a lot of fuel and emitted a huge amount of carbon dioxide.

Every time the generator was re-fuelled, there were risks of contamination and spillage.

Since the site is situated in the middle of a residential area, Generator Power received many complaints from local residents about the noise of the diesel generator disturbing their sleep. These complaints took a significant amount of time to deal with.

Generator Power was, therefore, seeking a quieter, more environment-friendly generator that would cut costs whilst providing the required amount of power.


Initially, Power Saving Solutions installed just one Hussh Pod 30/45 generator at the site. After a few days of monitoring, Power Saving Solutions quickly realised that the loads were far too high for the entire site to be powered for 12 hours on one Hussh Pod 30/45 alone.

If there had been enough space at the site, Power Saving Solutions would have installed its larger Hussh Pod 60/90 silent generator to provide the extra power.

However, since there was only sufficient space for one more Hussh Pod 30/45, Power Saving Solutions had to find a way of drawing the maximum amount of energy from the two Hussh Pod 30/45s during the night before switching back to the diesel generator to recharge the batteries in the morning.

In order to solve this problem, Power Saving Solutions’ engineers designed and manufactured a bespoke auto change-over switch.

Power Saving Solutions continued to monitor the site using its remote monitoring system, which allows it to observe exactly what is happening on the site 24/7, and to adjust the settings accordingly.


  • Since the Hussh Pod 30/45 is a silent generator, there has been a significant reduction in noise at the site. As a result, the residents get a good night’s sleep and complaints have disappeared.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions have decreased by 50 percent.

Charging Stations

Power Saving Solutions have been asked to produce a number of charging stations to help recharge our Pods on a large construction site in the south of England. The charging stations combine both 500w of solar and a 1kw wind turbine. These will be invaluable on such a large site. Historically the Hussh Pod 1/2’s have been collected at the end of the day and then taken to a central charging point. These solutions give us enormous flexibility and significantly reduce down time and manpower needed to manage the site.

This is another example of how site managers can take an innovative approach to managing their energy, reducing their diesel consumption, CO2 and eradicating noise. Additional benefits include reduced deliveries and risk of contamination.

Cheddington (Network Rail)

Better for the environment

One place our 90kw Hussh Pod is making a big difference is at Network Rail’s site at Cheddington. Here, it powers 5 cabins, including a drying room, a canteen, a CCTV network and external LED flood lighting for 14 hours every day.

The biggest challenge here was that the site was unmanned and close to a residential area. Our solution was to provide a quiet generator requiring little or no maintenance.

As well as removing nine tonnes of CO2, the unit has cut the amount of diesel required by on average 3360 litres of diesel every month, along the way reducing fuel deliveries by 60%. In addition, downtime associated with overuse and servicing has been largely eliminated.

Optimise, Oxford (Thames Water)

At this remote location, operated by Thames Water, contracting firm, Optimise, work from a site that requires generator power for five cabins, a drying room, a canteen, several storage units and LED flood lighting. However, the actual power requirements of the site are quite low, so our consultants were able to come up with a solution by deploying a 9kw Hussh Pod, which discharges to 50%, powering the site for up to 16 hours each day. This means that the site is powered for most of the day without the need to burn diesel.

The savings to our client are somewhere in the region of 3840 litres of diesel each month and over ten tons of CO2. Again, problems associated with overuse have been eliminated and fuel deliveries have decreased by 70%.

United Utilities (Haweswater)

Bespoke solutions for business.

This was a significant challenge for our team as the United Utilities crew needed to operate a number of power tools in a confined space. Due to toxic emissions, the use of diesel was out of the question. But what was particularly unique about this brief is that there couldn’t be any risk of water contamination.

Our custom-made solution was to design and install a 15kw Hussh Pod using a lithium ion battery. This was able to power the tools for up to 12 hours each day (all of the entire working shift), discharging to 80%, and ensuring power was drawn only when absolutely essential. Furthermore, because this model is lightweight and designed to be portable, it could be physically transported into the tunnel at the beginning of each shift and then removed to be recharged overnight, thus eliminating any chance of water contamination.
